Recyclables collection to be launched June 2 at Baguio State U – PIA!

BAGUIO CITY (31 May) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in partnership with the Philippine Business for Environment (PBE) will be launching the Recyclables Collection Event (RCE) on Friday, June 2, 2006 at the Benguet State University (BSU).

DENR Regional Executive Director Samuel Peñafiel said the activity is in line with the environment month celebration this June with this year’s theme “PAMANA ng Kapaligiran”, (a contraction of Pasiglahin Ang Matamlay NA Kapaligiran).

The RCE is scheduled on June 23 to be held in La Trinidad, Benguet. Peñafiel said this one-day collection and buying event for recyclable materials is spearheaded by the DENR and PBE in partnership with the local government units and various non-government organizations.

He said the event aims to promote materials recovery and recycling while gaining economic benefits from these.

Thru this activity, we hope to encourage more participation of industrial waste generators, industry and business establishments, the LGUs and government agencies in waste recycling as well as generate more private sector investments in the recycling industry, Peñafiel said.

Other agencies involved in the project include the Jaime v. Ongpin Foundation (JVOF), Baguio Regreening Movement (BRM) and La Trinidad as the focal partners.

Other activities during the celebration include the Tree Festival wherein the public is enjoined to plant trees at Burnham Park and along the Central Business District on Saturday, June 3, while the yearly cleaning activity of the Balili River in La Trinidad is scheduled on June 9, 2006.

With these activities the DENR hopes to gather more support from the society for the continuous protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources, Peñafiel said. (fnm/PIA-CAR)
