STL revival sought: Parcon – Sun.Star Iloilo!

AFTER the conduct of three public hearings on the application for a Small Town Lottery (STL) operation in the city, Councilor Armand Parcon said he might give his nod to the applicant.

Parcon is the chairman of the Committee on Games and Amusement, which led to the conduct of public hearings “to ascertain the pulse of the people on the revival of the STL” which he said will be the basis of the committee’s decision.

He said, “There was an overwhelming support of the revival of the STL.”

“The common reasons cited for the support for the revival of the STL were employment opportunities, source of income to both the government and the people, form of recreation and was believed to lessen the operations of illegal forms of gambling,” Parcon stressed.

He added that the same findings would aid him in making certain decisions on constructing the committee’s report that will be consolidated with his committee members’ opinions and findings.

Councilors Stevie Rey Abitang and Erwin Plagata are his co-members. The former, in earlier reports has expressed support for the STL.

Yesterday, pro-STL revival groups such as the members of the Urban Poor and the City Loopers of Iloilo Owners and Drivers of Jeepneys Association (Cliodja) attended the hearing.

The members of the said transport group have presented their support for the revival of the same.

On the other hand, Central Philippine University (CPU) Vice President of Academic Affairs Prof. Escuban solely stood as the oppositor.

Escuban expressed that there were better and moral ways to earn a living and sustain the family of its primary needs like education.

Meanwhile, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Visayas-Mindanao manager William Medesi and Janet Oberio will be attending the last public hearing Saturday.

Parcon said they would be tackling the implementing guidelines of the STL.

There are two applicants for STL operation in the city, Guillermo de la Cruz of Ma. Cristina, Jaro and Jerson Espinosa from the City proper. The two will stand as the incorporator of a separate operation.
