Hinoba-an mayor dies

Posted by Michille on July 5th, 2006

Hinoba-an mayor dies – Sun.Star Bacolod!

HINOBAAN Mayor Francisco Bilbao cheered for Manny Pacquiao when the Filipino champ won over Mexican boxer Oscar Larios Sunday.

Though he was suffering from a lingering illness for more than eight months, he was a picture of delight when watching Pacquiao strut his stuff over Larios.

His relatives, therefore, did not expect that the 72-year-old man, who was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, will breath his last yesterday at 4:25 a.m. at the Riverside Medical Center.

He died peacefully, his younger brother, Ernesto, said.

Ernesto said Mayor Bilbao left Hinobaan early Sunday morning for his usual check up at the Bacolod hospital.

He said he wanted to go back home early so as to watch Pacquiao’s scheduled match at the Araneta Coliseum in Manila.

His physician, Dr. John Ledesma, however, told him to stay overnight in the hospital leaving the mayor no choice but to follow his doctor’s advise.

Even if he was at the hospital, this did not stop the mayor from watching Pacquiao as his room has a TV set.

“He watched and cheered happily for Pacquiao. Even if the fight lasted until past 4 p.m.,” Ernesto told Sun.Star.

We thought all the while that in next morning (Monday), he will be checking out of the hospital. We were only shocked to see him Monday getting weaker. This prompted us to seek the assistance of Dr. Ledesma, Ernesto said.

Mayor Bilbao was confined to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) upon the recommendation of his physician. He died on his sleep.

The mayor, the fifth among the eight children of Spanish Estanislao Bilbao and Ilongga Felicidad Rivas is survived by his wife, Ma. Teresa Locsin and five children – Gerald Eugenio, Francisco Jose Jr., Jan Paul, Job Therese and Felicidad.
