Pacquiao promoter admits financing ‘masiao’

Posted by Michille on July 5th, 2006

Pacquiao promoter admits financing ‘masiao’ – ABS-CBN News!

Manny Pacquiao’s promoter admitted Wednesday that he operated the numbers racket “masiao” in the Visayas in the 1990s but stopped after the government shut down jai-alai operations.

The three winning numbers of masiao are derived from jai-alai results.

“It’s true I was involved [in masiao] during the time of [Charlie] Atong Ang,” boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud told DZMM.

Salud made the admission after a certain Jacko Montana told ABS-CBN’s news program Bandila Tuesday night that Pacquiao’s promoter finances masiao operations in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Salud said, however, he gave up masiao and concentrated on boxing promotion after the Estrada administration ordered the cancellation of jai-alai games in October 2000.

In the Bandila interview, Montana said Salud owns a printing press in Cebu that produces jai-alai tips used by masiao collectors and bettors.

Salud admitted knowing Montana, who he said has a grudge against him. He said he will talk to his lawyer in Cebu to determine his next step against Montana.

Salud’s name also surfaced when the Senate investigated the proliferation of the numbers racket last year. A witness, Richard Garcia, said Salud financed masiao operations in the Visayas and Mindanao.
