OVER 500 FLEE HOMES NEAR MAYON – Tempo News!

By ED DE LEON

LEGAZPI CITY – Fearing for their safety after hearing rumbling and hissing sounds from Mt. Mayon, some 114 families or 591 persons residing just outside the six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) fled their homes located at the volcano’s northern slope in Barangay Magapo, Tabaco City.

Cedric Daep, executive officer of the Albay Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) said yesterday the evacuees decided to leave their homes on their own, even without an official order from the PDCC, because of the increasing rumblings and hissing sounds coming from underneath the volcano.

He said the residents are now temporarily housed in at least 11 classrooms in San Antonio Elementary School in Tabaco City.

He added that relief goods were distributed to the evacuees by the Tabaco City social welfare office.

Last week, at least 495 families from four villages within the eight-to-10-kilometer radius of the volcano in Sto. Domingo town also left their homes due to ash fall triggered by secondary explosions and rumblings heard under the volcano.

Most of the evacuees return to their houses during the day and leave during the night for the San Andres and Bical resettlement sites, both in Sto. Domingo.

Daep clarified that those who voluntarily left their homes could not be assured of a steady supply of relief goods which are being reserved should more evacuees arrive when the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raises the alert level.

Leyte frat collects 34 sacks of garbage – PIA!

By Bong Pedalino

MAASIN CITY (31 July) — In connection with its upcoming 33rd anniversary this coming August 8, the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity conducted a community outreach program by cleaning the seaside and highway of barangay Pasay, one of this city’s barangay, last Saturday, July 29.

Cesar Zapata, an employee at GSIS-Maasin who was the organizer of the fraternity’s Southern Leyte Council, told PIA that they have thoroughly cleaned the seaside portion of the said barangay, as well as its main street and highway.

More than 40 members of the fraternity actively participated in the coastal cleanup and side road cleaning, and the activity netted some 34 sacks fully loaded with various kinds of garbage.

Barangay Pasay is the boundary barangay of Maasin city to the east, bordering the next town Macrohon, and the place is headed by Punong Barangay Vitorio Villaranda, the President of the City’s association of Barangay Captains.

Zapata said their priority activity would have been a mass blood-letting with the local chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross, but they were informed that the Red Cross has plenty of blood stocks at the moment because of the recent mass blood-letting of criminology students of Saint Joseph College.

The fraternity, however, still intends to donate blood next month as per Red Cross’ advice, so in the meantime they thought of another activity and it was decided that they clean up a shoreline and a highway in one of Maasin’s barangays, and barangay Pasay was eventually chosen, Zapata adeded.

Among the officers of Alpha Kappa Rho are the following: Grand Skeptron — Alex Mitaran; Presidents of Barangays: for Maasin – Ronald Basco; Pasay – Noli Belitor; Ma. Clara – Jeffer Duke Plaza; and Ichon – Ramonito Maraon. (PIA-Southern Leyte)

DOH Samar eyes bloodletting activity to stop hazardous sale of blood – PIA!

by Ninfa B. Quirante

Catbalogan, Samar (31 July) — To curve the hazards caused by the commercial sale of blood, Provincial Health Officer (PHO) and Samar Provincial Hospital Chief Dr. Rudolf U. Mabulay and his staff will embark on a massive bloodletting activity to coincide with the Samar Day celebration on August 7-8, 2006.

This will also be the contribution of the SPH with the celebration of National health Consciousness Week, the doctor said.

Earlier, Ms. Cynthia MacKinley in PIA’s radio program said that the activity will also be in celebration of Blood Donors Month. Doctors from the East Avenue Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) will assist them as they prepare for a massive turn-out of blood donors from agencies, schools and the public.

During the interview, an unidentified caller told MacKinley and PIA that some adults have been loitering the vicinities of the SPH to ‘sell’ blood. MacKinley reacted by saying, that the present hospital administration is trying to correct this malpractice and will try to gradually establish a blood bank.

Relatives of victims needing blood have no choice but to ‘hire’ the ‘roving blood bank’, once the need arise said one ‘bloodseller’ himself who requested not to be named. He added that lately, though ‘business’ has not been that good. Perhaps, he said this is already the campaign result to stop the practice.

Dr. Mabulay, for his part said that the establishment of a blood bank in the hospital will generate safe blood supply diminishing the spread of HIV, hepatitis and other transmissible diseases. Once a donor submits himself to blood donation, he will undergo an interview to determine if his lifestyle would equate safe blood. Added to this, his blood sample will also undergo screening to ensure that only safe and healthy blood are stored for future use.

PHO is inviting would be donors to report to the Samar Gymnasium on the appointed date to donate blood and save lives. He encourages donors that it is a genuine service to mankind to donate blood. Blood he said can regenerate after some time. It does not pose any health hazard because only the healthy ones are encouraged to do so.

Apart from the blood letting activity, Dr. Mabulay also announced that free pap smear will be done to the first 200 patients. This service if paid could save one at least five hundred pesos, the new PHO added. He said that pap smear is necessary for forty-something women so that early stages of diseases can be detected. Petron raises debt issue on strong demand – ABS-CBN News!

Petron Corp., the country’s largest oil refiner, said on Monday it was raising for a second time the amount of its five-year corporate notes issue to P6.3 billion ($122.6 million) due to strong demand.

Last week, Petron said it had raised the size of its notes from P3 billion to P5.5 billion after receiving bids amounting to P11.2 billion, close to four times subscribed.

The notes fetched a rate of 8.875 percent, 53 basis points lower than the July 21 secondary market rate of 9.405 percent of government bonds with the same tenure.

Petron closed 2.3 percent higher at P4.45 on Monday while the Philippine Stock Exchange index rose 2.63 percent to 2,390.84 points.

“We are very pleased with the confidence placed by the investment community in Petron,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Nicasio Alcantara said in a statement.

Petron has said that the issue was the largest peso private placement and the lowest priced corporate issue in the Philippines.

Petron, 40 percent-owned by the government and Middle East oil giant Saudi Aramco, said that proceeds from the debt issue would be used to finance the upgrade of its 180,000-barrel-per-day refinery.

The upgrade, to be completed in 2008, is aimed at raising its production of petrochemicals.

The company said last week its first-half net profit rose 16 percent to P2.7 billion, thanks to higher export volumes and improved operational efficiencies.

2 ‘pimps’ to be sued over hiring of minors as bar entertainers – Sun.Star Pangasinan!

San Jacinto Police Chief Ferdinand de Asis disclosed that they learned about the ordeal of the victims after the sister of one of the victims came to his office and sought police assistance.

Read the full story:

SAN JACINTO — Two women, who allegedly recruited three minors to work either as house helpers or food servers in Manila, will be charged with violation of Republic Act (RA) 7610 or the Anti-Child Abuse Law and white slavery case as the girls allegedly ended up working as guest relation officers (GROs) in a videoke bar.

San Jacinto Police Chief Ferdinand de Asis identified the suspects as Julie Ibañez of Mangaldan and Malou Panis of San Jacinto.

he alleged owner of Mangantila Videoke Bar situated at the Robinson Building in Sangandaan, Caloocan City, identified as Ricky Chao, will also be included in the case.

The victims were Emily, 16, Alona, 15, and Roma, 19, all residents of Barangay Macayug in San Jacinto.

De Asis said they learned about the ordeal of the three after the sister of one of the victims came to his office and sought police assistance. He said a rescue operation was subsequently planned.

Prior to the rescue operation, a report said Ibañez escorted the three girls to Manila on June 20, 2006. She brought the victims to Chao instead to a work as she promised.

Thereafter, the club owner allegedly forced the girls to work as GROs in the nightspot.

During a police investigation, the victims said Chao scolded them every time they refused to entertain customers or they complained about the customers who touched them. They said that the club operator usually padlocked them in a room to prevent them from running away.

One of the girls said through a cell phone she borrowed from a customer, they were able to send a text message to her sister and ask for help.
