LEGAZPI CITY (31 October) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) further downgraded to Alert Level One the restiveness of Mt. Mayon after at least three weeks of simmering down of eruptive activities.

But Phivolcs warned the public that the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) remains off limits to all human activities especially within the southeast sector where volcanic flows, falling and rolling debris might be produced from possible sudden explosion.

Latest 24-hour observation by Phivolcs recorded one high frequency volcanic earthquake compared with the two recorded a week earlier.

Steam activity at the crater summit was recorded at moderate level and intensity 2-crater glow, which was visible to the naked eye in the evening.

Over in Masbate, an earthquake measured at the magnitude of 5 followed by some four minor aftershocks occurring within minutes of each other, rocked the island province Thursday morning, October 26.

Based on data provided the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was some 36 kilometers east of the main island of Masbate, some 400 kilometers southeast of Manila. It said that the quake was moderate.

Reports coming from the Phivolcs in Masbate said their seismic network registered the first tremor at 7:40 in the morning at intensity 3 followed by one at intensity 2; a third one at 8:40 a.m., intensity 2; 8:41 am at intensity 5; 8:43 am at intensity 3 and; 8:45 a.m., intensity 2.

The Masbate Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council said there had been no reported injuries, or damage to property. (PIA Masbate)
