More LPG price rollbacks until November

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

By Euan Paulo C. Añonuevo

The country’s independent oil players on Monday announced another set of price cuts for liquefied petroleum gas. They also said more rollbacks will be made in November.

Arnel Ty, president of the LPG Marketers’ Association, said in an interview, “Starting midnight [Tuesday morning] we will implement a P0.50 rollback per kilo on the price of LPG. This translates into a P460 retail price for LPG from P466.”

The price cut was the group’s fourth for the month of October, the result of lower contract prices in the world market. Ty added that two to three rollbacks in the price of LPG will be made in November.

“The contract price is lower because of corrections in prices in the Middle East, which in the past few months were abnormally high.”

IN anticipation of a buildup in the volume of vehicles in areas surrounding Metro Manila’s cemeteries, various local governments will be implementing rerouting schemes to ensure the orderly flow of traffic on Nov. 1 and 2.

In Manila, traffic on the streets leading to the La Loma Cemetery, Chinese Cemetery and North and South cemeteries will be rerouted beginning at 4 a.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. the following day.

A portion of Aurora Boulevard (from Rizal Avenue to Makiling Street) and peripheral roads will be closed, as well as Retiro (from Aurora Boulevard up to Blumentritt), Dimasalang (from Calle Tiago to Blumentritt) and Maceda (from Retiro to Makiling).

Motorists coming from the north, particularly Caloocan and Quezon cities, going to Pier North in Tondo, should take C3 Road toward Jose Abad Santos Avenue or Road 10.

THE HOUSE majority already has more than the required three-fourths vote of Congress to amend the Constitution through a constituent assembly, a leading congressional ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said yesterday.

Surigao del Sur Representative Prospero Pichay said that 194 congressmen — one signature more than the 193 required to change the Charter — had already signed his House Resolution 1285, which proposes to change the country’s presidential form of government to a parliamentary system by 2010.

“The requirement of 193 signatures has been met. Pwede na (It’s done). Definitely, I will go for it,” Pichay said.

Pichay said the vote of the Senate, which opposes Charter change, will not be needed if there is already a three-fourth vote in the House of Representatives.

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

Tacloban City (October 31) — Land Transportation Office 8 Regional Director Raul Aguilos presided over the organizational meeting, today, of the Regional Council for Road Safety and Environment Friendly Transport System.

In the meeting which was held at the LTO 8 Regional Office, Director Aguilos stressed that the leading cause of fatalities in the country today is road accidents. Although this may not be apparent in Region 8 yet, Director Aguilos and the members of the council believe it is of paramount importance that concerted efforts be initiated to address the occurrences of road accidents because the Region has already its share of road accidents.

The members of the Council agreed that since all the respective agencies are somehow and in some ways involved in promoting road safety and clean air related transport programs, by joining their individual efforts together, the result will be of more impact to the citizenry of the Region.

The Council is composed of the Land Transportation Office, the Department of Public works and Highways, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Environmental Management Bureau, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the Philippine National Police, the Traffic Management Group, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Philippine Information Agency, the Department of Interior and Local Government and the City Government of Tacloban.

Waves batter coral rehab project

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

DIVE experts said conservation efforts in Sarangani Bay and Celebes Sea suffered a major blow from the dozens of storms or typhoons that hit the Philippines this year.

Chris Dearne, spokesperson of the Sarangani Bay Divers, expressed confidence the damage wrought by the storms to the corals can still be repaired.

“Unfortunately for us, the weather has been very unkind. This has caused a slowdown of the project as the waves have been just too big and powerful to allow divers to work safely deploying the domes,” Dearne said in a report released last week.

Dearne and his American friend John Heitz have been leading efforts by private groups to conserve the marine environment by dropping artificial reef domes along the coastal waters of Sarangani Bay.

“Storms have stirred up the sediments on the seabed causing the visibility to drop to zero on many occasions,” Dearne revealed.
