Trainees start looking for jobs in call centers

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

THE “good turnout” of the first batch of call center trainees at the University of Cebu (UC) training center for communication skills enhancement proved the industry’s need for fluent English speakers, an official from the private-sector led Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) said.

“After conducting the first training, we are convinced that there is a need (for training). It’s just a matter of communicating it to the public,” Cedf-it executive director Bonifacio Belen said.

Belen said that 98 percent of the first batch of 17 trainees, comprising mostly students and professionals, has started to apply as call center agents, and expressed optimism that they will be hired.

Hike in hotel room rates not opportunism: official

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

Baguio Tourism Council (BTC) chairman Anthony de Leon assured that an increase in hotel rates would not affect the city’s tourism industry as a whole but merely the establishment with “expensive” rates.

Glimpse of the story:

THE increase in hotel room rates at times when there is an expected influx of tourists is not opportunism but a normal business strategy, said the chairman of the Baguio Tourism Council (BTC).

Reacting to complaints that hotel rates go up during occasions like the flower festival, Christmas season and during summer, BTC chairman Anthony de Leon said that the hotels industry adopts different rates, which normally depends on the type of occasion.

De Leon said there are peak and off-peak season rates that normally reflect on the rate or tariff cards of every hotel, but this does not automatically translate to overpricing as claimed.

‘Paeng’ leaves trail of death and devastation

Posted by Michille on 31st October 2006

Powerful Typhoon Paeng (internationally named Cimarrón) lashed the northern Philippines early Monday, killing a mother and child and forcing thousands of other people to evacuate, disaster relief officials said.

The 28-year-old woman and her child, six, were killed in a coastal village in Aurora province, where police chief Teodoro Saklolo said strong winds blew away houses made of light material and wood.

Paeng, packing winds of 195 kilometers (121 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 230 kilometers an hour, slammed into Northern Luzon late Sunday.

Senior Supt. Saklolo said some low-lying areas in Aurora were also flooded after heavy rains fell overnight.

Radio reports said the typhoon uprooted trees and toppled electric posts, causing widespread blackouts in parts of Northern Luzon.

THE JAPANESE embassy yesterday sought to clarify “some misunderstanding” that the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) would allow the entry of toxic and hazardous waste into the Philippines.

Environmental groups last week slammed the accord which President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and then Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi signed on Sept. 9 in Helsinki on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting.

Calls were also made in the Senate, the Philippines’ treaty-ratifying body, for hearings on the agreement, following criticism by environmentalists that in exchange for Filipino nurses and caregivers, the country would become Japan’s dump.
