WITH a face value of less than two US cents, the one-peso coin may be worth next to nothing here but it spells big bucks in metal-hungry China.
The coins are being sold there for P1, 000 a kilogram, and the metal derived from melting them down is used in the manufacture of electronics goods like mobile phones. Indeed, coin smuggling has become something of a growth industry here and a major headache for the central bank.
Philippine coins have become more valuable abroad as a result of rising metal prices, but inflation has diminished their value locally. Indeed, many Filipinos no longer bother to carry them.
With the copper and nickel content worth more than the face value of the coin, the central bank has realized that minting them is no longer cost effective, bank director Fe de la Cruz says. To address this problem, the bank has issued a new one-peso coin that looks identical to the old version but is made from a cheaper steel alloy, she says.

“For so long now, we have asked the Philippine government to declare the Sheikh Karimul Makhdum mosque a national shrine and it is only this time that the Senate recognized the country’s oldest Islamic landmark,” Pulalun said at a news conference here on Tuesday.
The mosque in Simunul town was constructed in AD 1380 by an Arabian missionary, Sheik Karimul Makdum, who introduced Islam to the Philippines.
