Commentary: Be safe in welcoming the New Year

Posted by Michille on December 28th, 2006

Negros Occidental (27 December) — Some parts of the country like the cities of Cebu and Ormoc, had their taste of a “fiery” Christmas after fire broke out which left several people killed and many injured.

In Ormoc, the fire started due to mishandling of firecracker. A lot of fire-cracker related fire calls were reported in the past which brought damaged properties and claimed lives of many. There were also reported cases of death due to Watusi poisoning which mostly affect children who are fond of this type of firecracker.

Despite repeated calls from the Department of Health to stop using firecrackers, still many are left unaware. This year as we welcome the New Year, the Department of Health continues its campaign for a safe celebration.

DOH Advisory informs the public to follow the FOURmula against firecracker-related injuries. Health Secretary Francisco Duque recommended as the first item in the FOURmula is not to use firecrackers at all. Duque said that although most hospitals are ready to attend to firecracker-related injuries, the best way to avoid injuries is to avoid firecrackers.

If in case one is hurt with a firecracker, the DOH advised to wash the affected area with soap and water immediately go to the nearest hospital or health center. Third is to never pick up defective firecrackers. The fourth of the FOURmula is an advised to gun owners to be responsible by not firing their gun to welcome the year.

For children affected by Watusi poisoning, it is suggested not to induce vomitting. 6-8 egg whites should be given to children while 8-12 egg whites for adults. In case of dermal exposure, bathe the patient using alkaline soap, the likes of Perla or Ivory.

And even if the child seems well, bring him to the nearest hospital since the ill effect of watusi ingestion may not be seen at once.

These advisories were made by DOH in anticipation of firecracker-related injuries which records show an increase of 59 from 63 in 2005 to 122 in 2006 and to prevent the same incident like that of Ormoc to happen again. (PIA/EAD)
