The powerful earthquake which hit Taiwan Tuesday has cut Philippine telecoms capacity by as much as 40 percent, a senior official said yesterday.
Slow Internet connections are expected to persist for another two weeks, as telecommunication companies and Internet service providers find alternate routes to link up to the Web.
National Telecommunications Commission Deputy Commissioner Jorge Sarmiento said some 60 percent of phone and Internet capacity was operational as carriers rerouted through other links to North America, the Middle East, Hawaii, Malaysia and Singapore.

The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) will provide 24-hour assistance during the New Year celebration, the company said in a statement issued Thursday.
Elpi Cuna, MERALCO vice-president for corporate communication, said emergency crews will be on alert, most especially on New Year’s Eve and throughout the holidays, to ensure that MERALCO will be able to respond to any contingency. Contingency measures are already in place in case their facilities get affected by pyrotechnics and firecracker explosions, Cuna added.
“We advise the general public not to play with firecrackers and pyrotechnics near our facilities most especially electric lines and transformers because these may cause power interruptions, and even start fires. To ensure safety, people should remember that firecrackers and pyrotechnics near electric facilities is a dangerous mix,” Cuna warned.

Top Rank to lure Barrera for an April 28 fight for $ 2.5 million
By NICK GIONGCO
NO ONE knows for sure what Bob Arum did to convince Manny Pacquiao that his future lies with him.
But yesterday, Arum emerged triumphant in the battle for the mind and hands of the country’s sports superstar when the two formally announced an alliance that left Oscar de la Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions eating dust.
For sure, it was not only the reported $ 1 million signing bonus which Arum dropped on Pacman’s already bountiful bank account. But it probably helped Pacquiao to affix his signature on a contract that would allow the 75-year-old promoter to chart the boxer’s future.
First for 2007 is a projected fight on April 28 in Las Vegas against Marco Antonio Barrera, who Arum will try to sign up for a $ 2.5 million purse and a share on the pay-per-view sales.

MALACAÑANG on Thursday warned the public of using the “boga” or PVC pipe bazookas that is now the fad in welcoming the New Year.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the government could not ban the boga but it could appeal to the public, particularly the parents to be wary of them.
Ermita also called the attention of the police and the local government units (LGUs) to possibly regulate the sale and handling of the boga to ensure the safety of the public, particularly the young.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said LGUs may consider passing an ordinance banning the sale and use of the boga but until then, it would be up to the police to regulate and possibly decide whether it should be confiscated and barred.
