Asian countries should strengthen regional cooperation to better handle cross-border problems such as bird flu and terrorism, Singapore’s president said Tuesday on a visit to the Philippines.
Singapore President S. R. Nathan, who arrived in Manila on Tuesday for a four-day state visit, cited the 40-year relationship both the Philippines and Singapore had with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which he said was a model of a successful regional organization.
“Transboundary problems such as avian flu, terrorism, and haze pollution cannot be effectively addressed by any one country on its own and would need to be managed by us in Asean collectively,” Nathan said in a speech during a dinner hosted by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
