RP consumer prices rose 2.2% in April – DBS

Posted by Michille on 30th April 2007

Singapore-based DBS Bank Ltd. on Monday said it expects Philippine inflation in April to have remained at a seven-year low of 2.2 percent due to a slight decline in food prices.

Philippine consumer prices rose 2.2 percent in March. The National Statistics Office is set to release the April data on Friday.

In a note to clients, DBS said that despite the country’s steadily decreasing inflation, it does not expect the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to cut interest rates as domestic money supply remains an inflationary concern.

Women more critical voters than men, poll exec says

Posted by Michille on 30th April 2007

By Joyce Pangco Pañares

Today is a red-letter day for Filipino women, April 30 being Woman Suffrage Day.

And while it is unfortunate that most Pinays are not aware of the history of their right to vote, no less than the Commission on Elections has admitted that women tend to turn in a more educated vote—with their role as both professionals and homemakers making them more critical voters than most male voters.

“They are mothers and they are professionals. They take care of their homes while bringing home the bacon, so to speak. In that way, women have become more politically adept than most of their male counterparts,” said Comelec director Esmeralda Ladra.

Gov’t seeks private sector support

Posted by Michille on 30th April 2007

Big infrastructure projects offered

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has urged the private sector to support government’s priority infrastructure projects at a recent meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) in Makati City.

“Some of the projects involved either collaborations between the government and the private sector or purely private sector undertakings, all of which are financially viable. This will help spur infrastructure development in the country. This will help in ensuring the country’s competitiveness and further development,” says Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo L. Neri.
