Prices of school supplies remain stable

Posted by Michille on 31st May 2007

By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu City (31 May) — “Prices of school supplies in Cebu are still stable.”

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Cebu officer-in-charge Zaide Bation said during a media interview today. She said, the DTI monitoring team had been monitoring the prices of major stores that sell school supplies since last month and it noted that prices had been stable.

“We were monitoring the prices of school supplies every week so we can see the movement, if there is any but so far, there is nothing to worry because the prices are very stable,” Bation assured the public in the wake of the opening of classes on June 4.

According to the DTI monitoring team, aside from stable prices, the quality of school supplies had not deteriorated. The lowest priced notebook, for example costs P7>50 while the highest is at P21.75; paper prices range from P9.50 to 28 and pencils are sold from P3.50 to 5.50.

“We were only monitoring the fixed establishments and major stores that are selling school supplies. We did not monitor smaller stores and sidewalk stalls. We can’t guarantee the quality of the products sold at the sidewalks,” Bation commented.

Bation added that they also monitored the prices of basic commodities and they noted that prices are also stable despite the increases of petroleum products in the past two weeks. (PIA-Cebu)

US stocks retreat after China market drop

Posted by Michille on 31st May 2007

NEW YORK – Wall Street retreated Wednesday as investors around the world reacted to a plunge in China’s stock market, and awaited the release of minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting.

The pullback in the US wasn’t seen as a surprise as stocks were perhaps overdue for a consolidation after a strong run since the second half of 2006. And the declines in Asian and European markets did not appear as dramatic as on Feb. 27, when investors around the world recoiled at a 9 percent slide in the Shanghai index.

Tourist arrivals in Dumaguete up

Posted by Michille on 31st May 2007

Dumaguete City (31 May) — Tourist arrivals in Dumaguete City are up on the first quarter of this year, from 32,557 in the same period last year to 40,050 this year, according to data from the City Tourism Office.

American nationals compose the biggest chunk of foreign tourists in the city in the first quarter of this year, totaling to 1,409, followed by Koreans with 1,004 and Japanese, 708.

City Tourism Officer Imelda Jaybee F. Aquino attributes the increase to the city government’s efficient promotion and advertising of the city as a premier tourist spot.

Aquino also said that they have participated in various tourism exhibits across the country.

The booming tourist traffic in the city is also a result of the over-all rise of tourist arrivals in the country.

Jose Clemente III, president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association, said that about 3.5 million foreign tourists are expected to visit the country this year, up from 2.8 million in 2006, which was already a record high.

“The rise of local and international visitors would mean increase employment and booming of local business establishments especially hotels and restaurants,” said Aquino.

The Department of Tourism estimated that a foreign tourist in the Philippines would spend an average of $1, 200, higher than the country’s per capita gross domestic product of about $1, 000.

To further boost Dumaguete’s tourism lure, Aquino pointed out the need to improve the city’s airport and seaport facilities for the convenience of domestic and foreign visitors, and for private enterprises especially restaurants and hotels to improve costumer services. (PIA)
