US sending Negroponte to ASEAN meetings
By CHARISSA M. LUCI

Washington will send Deputy Secretary of State and former ambassador to the Philippines John D. Negroponte to the Philippines to lead its delegation to the 40th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, Post-Ministerial Conferences and 14th ASEAN Regional Forum, the United States Embassy in Manila announced yesterday.

The confirmation came a day after the US Embassy hinted at the non-attendance of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the meetings. It said Rice would likely skip the meetings because of her engagements in the Middle East.

Negroponte, who served as the US Ambassador to the Philippines from 1993 to 1996, will participate in the two-day security forum to be held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City Aug.1-2, the US Embassy said in a statement.

Before the ASEAN meetings, the US senior official will hold bilateral consultations with Philippine government officials on Tuesday, July 31, it said.

On Aug. 2, Negroponte will leave the Philippines for Tokyo, Japan “for discussions with the Japanese government on matters of mutual interest.”
