38 Cebu firms close, lay off 13,000

CEBU CITY—At least 13,000 workers in Cebu have lost their jobs since 2005 due to the closure of 38 furniture companies in Metro Cebu and the slowdown in the operation of a multinational company in Danao City.

Because of this, the Confederation of Philippine Exporters Foundation Inc. (Philexport) in Cebu yesterday asked the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB) to implement a 12-month moratorium on wage increases until business in the province recovers.

“We, Philexport Cebu, acting as the representative of all the exporting industries in the Central Visayas region, hereby submit an appeal for support and exemption from any wage hike in the next 12 months in order to stabilize our sector and allow us to rebound from the recent setbacks,” the group urged the regional wage board in a position paper.
