Death puts end to short, happy life of Cris
By Jeannette Andrade
Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines – Twenty-year-old Cris Anthony Mendez was a regular guy who “wanted to meet everyone.â€
Picking up a line from a Tagalog movie, he would describe himself as “Parang karinderia na bukas sa lahat ng gustong kumain.â€
His death, suspected to be the result of hazing, cut short his Friendster run. Mendez’ Friendster account received 59 messages from friends expressing outrage and sadness at the fate of the senior University of the Philippines (UP) public administration student, the National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) representative to the UP student council.
NCPAG Dean Alex Brillantes said they would hold a rally 10 a.m. today at the college to express outrage and grief at Mendez’s violent death. Students will march towards the Palma Hall to join a similar activity organized by the UP Student Council.

Friday, August 31, 2007
Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison faces indictment today in The Hague for multiple murder charges, Dutch Ambassador Robert Vornis said yesterday.
Vornis said Sison is also scheduled to appear before a judge who will decide if he will remain in detention for 14 days from his indictment. After 14 days, Sison may have to spend another 90 days in jail if a group of judges says so.
“He will be presented to the examining judge (today). After this he will have a period of three days and maximum period of six days before the obligation to present the accused to the examining judge and it is within his or her competence to decide whether it is warranted to extend the period for another 14,†Vornis said.
“After that period of 14 days, there is another moment of decision where the group of judges will decide if it can again extend the period of detention of Mr. Sison and that decision can be a detention period of a maximum of 90 days,†Vornis said. “After that, he would have to have the first presentation of the case before the court.â€

Sison symphatizers to hold worldwide protests
Progressive group members were set to hold simultaneous demonstrations Thursday in various countries to protest the arrest of communist leader Jose Maria Sison in The Netherlands.
Carol Araullo, chairwoman of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), said activist groups based in United States, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Europe will launch protests actions to decry Sison’s “unjust and politically motivated” arrest.
“The Arroyo government is sorely mistaken when it thinks that it can intimidate the peoples’ movement for national liberation and democracy. This whole incident will backfire on the Arroyo regime and the war-mongers in her Cabinet. The whole world is seeing the insincerity of the Philippine government in pursuing the peace negotiations,” Araullo said.

Comelec chair admits treating China firm execs
Elections Chair Benjamin Abalos on Thursday admitted pampering officials of a Chinese firm involved in the controversial $329-million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal.
The poll official said the executives of the China state-run ZTE Corp. eventually “returned the favor” to him.
Abalos admitted playing golf with the ZTE officials, saying he and his family have ties with the Chinese executives as “golfers” and as “extended family.”
“It is not in bad taste for a golfer to return a favor. We sometimes come up with parties for a group of golfers that comes here. That’s how golfers are, we spoil each other even if our wallets hurt afterwards,” he said in Filipino on Iglesia ni Cristo-run dzEC radio.

‘Power rates could go up by P2/kwh’
By Jess Diaz
Thursday, August 30, 2007
An opposition congressman warned millions of electricity users yesterday that power rates could soon increase by P2 per kilowatt-hour.
Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona lll said government-owned power generators are seeking the go-signal of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for them to collect P9 billion for electricity sold in September and October 2006.
He said the power producers want to collect the huge amount from consumers despite the fact that regulators had discovered that they manipulated prices.
“In spite of the fact that they were caught dictating and manipulating prices, they want to be allowed to collect P9 billion. This would translate into an increase of P2 per kwh in the consumers’ monthly bills,†he said.
Guingona urged the ERC to reject the collection demand of power producers involved in the manipulation of prices last year.
