By Jess Diaz
Saturday, September 29, 2007

Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. said yesterday he would not turn his back on his duties, but assured the people yesterday that he would be neutral and fair in dealing with the impeachment complaint filed against embattled Chairman Benjamin Abalos of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“I promise before God that I will not intervene, I will not ask my colleagues in the House to vote one way or the other,” he told reporters.

Abalos earlier urged De Venecia to stay away from the impeachment case filed at the House.

“I will be neutral, I will be fair and just, because one of the accusers is my son,” he said.

31 hours on ZTE? Too much, says Joker

BY AUREA CALICA
The Philippine Star

Sen. Joker Arroyo lamented on Friday that his colleagues were spending too much time investigating the national broadband network (NBN) controversy to the detriment of other matters that need legislative attention.

“Where are we going?” Arroyo asked, noting that the Senate had spent a total of 31 hours hearing the NBN issue compared to the 100 minutes the lawmakers spent on subsequent sessions.

“The questions have become repetitive. The questions that have been asked already are asked again and again. Why don’t we have time for our other work?” Arroyo asked.

Miriam’s temper flares anew

By Efren L. Danao Senior Reporter

A day after appearing meek and apologetic for making Chinese slurs, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago’s famous temper was again on display Friday.

This time, journalists and other people attending a budget committee public hearing got her fired up. And instead of walking out, she had them locked in the hearing room with her.

Santiago, chairman of a finance subcommittee, was hearing the proposed 2008 budget of the Department of Labor and Employment when she blew her top when she was distracted by people continuously entering and leaving the room.

GMA calls for release of Aung San Suu Kyi

By Angelo S. Samonte Reporter

President Gloria Arroyo urged the Myanmar government to release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Buddhist monks who have been rounded up for staging protests against the country’s military rulers.

In a statement that she distributed personally to members of the Philippine media at the Waldorf Astoria Towers in New York, the President said freeing Suu Kyi from years of house arrest serves Myanmar’s own best interests and avoid further isolation of the country from the rest of the world’s democracies.
