18 years in slammer for Leyte lawmaker
By Macon Ramos Araneta
THE government’s anti-corruption court yesterday sentenced Leyte Rep. Eufrocino Codilla Sr. to 18 years in jail, after finding him guilty of two counts of graft committed when he was mayor of Ormoc City in 1993 and 1994.
The Sandiganbayan 5th Division also disqualified Codilla, a three-term mayor, from holding public office again.
Upon the request of his lawyer, Codilla was allowed to maintain his P60,000 bail bond for his temporary liberty pending his filing of an appeal and the final court resolution.
At the same time, the Leyte lawmaker was cleared on two counts of misconduct, saying there was not enough evidence.

RP contingency plan ready for Israel-Iran conflict
Friday, September 28, 2007
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said there is a contingency plan for overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East in the event armed hostilities break out between Israel and Iran.
DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said contingency plans are always in place in countries where there are Filipinos and that diplomatic missions abroad are under instructions to monitor the peace and order situation in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
DFA’s assurance came in the wake of reports of retaliatory strikes being prepared by Iran in case of an attack by Israel. It was Iran’s Air Force deputy chief Gen. Mohammad Alavi who revealed the battle preparations.
Middle East tension heightened following Israel’s alleged intrusion into Syria’s airspace.

Abalos wants JDV to inhibit from impeach proceedings
Commission on Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. on Friday said Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. should inhibit himself from the impeachment proceedings filed against him by Iloilo Vice-Gov. Rolex Suplico.
Abalos made the pleading as he believes de Venecia has a hand in what he called a “a sustained and well funded campaign” to destroy him.
“I don’t believe the Speaker doesn’t have a hand on this. For delicadeza, I hope he inhibits himself on this,” Abalos told radio DZMM when asked if his relationship with de Venecia had been severed by the $329-million national broadband network (NBN) deal controversy.
