Lipo, mesotherapy won’t remove dangerous fat – expert

Friday, September 28, 2007

Liposuction and mesotherapy will not remove the dangerous fat in the liver and the intestines, a medical expert clarified yesterday.

Dr. Rosa Allyn Sy, president of the Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PASOO), said what liposuction does is take away the subcutaneous fat under the skin, not the dangerous fat tucked deep inside the abdomen wrapped around the bowels.

“Liposuction does not target the fats in the liver and the intestines, it’s purely a cosmetic procedure. The fat in the abdomen can lead to different medical problems,” Sy told reporters during the World Heart Day “Team Up for Healthy Hearts” press conference organized by the Philippine Heart Association.

Red-faced Santiago says sorry to China

By Gil C. Cabacungan Jr.
Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines — An embarrassed Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago Thursday apologized for saying that China “invented corruption” during a heated hearing on the allegedly overpriced National Broadband Network (NBN) project that the Philippine government signed with a Chinese company.

“I will write a formal letter of apology to the Chinese ambassador,” Santiago, head of the Senate foreign relations committee and a close ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, told reporters.

Santiago, famous for her mercurial temper, berated China in Wednesday’s nationally televised hearing on the $329-million NBN project that was awarded to China’s Zhong Xing Telecommunication Equipment (ZTE) Corp. amid allegations of bribery and overpricing.

FOUR “antiterrorist court judges” from the Pasig City Regional Trial Court (RTC) are facing possible penalties and contempt charges from the Supreme Court for failing to resolve the cases involving the Abu Sayyaf.

In a two-page resolution, the Court gave Judges Leili Suarez, Alfredo Flores, Agnes Carpio and Isagani Geronimo of the Pasig RTC 10 days to explain why they should not be cited for indirect contempt for failing to resolve the cases filed before them.

Arroyo wishes Filipinos need not work abroad

In a meeting with Filipinos in New York Wednesday night, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said she was looking forward to the time when going abroad for work would be just an option for Filipinos, not their only choice to earn a living.

“We take pride in our overseas Filipinos,” the President declared. “You are honored by the government and the people for your sacrifice and dedication to your work, your family and your nation,” she said.

Filipinos overseas sent $12.8 billion to their relatives in the Philippines in 2006. By the end of this year, the total remittance has been projected to reach $14 billion.

MANILA, Philippines — “Only treason was left out of all the possible grounds for impeachment under the Constitution. It’s only because the country is not at war,” Iloilo Vice Gov. Rolex Suplico said as he filed his impeachment complaint against Comelec Chair Benjamin Abalos Thursday.

Feeling the heat, Abalos Thursday asked Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to stay out of the impeachment complaint filed against him for allegedly brokering the $329-million contract for the National Broadband Network (NBN) project.

“I hope he won’t interfere,” Abalos told reporters after appearing at a hearing in the House of Representatives on the proposed Comelec budget for next year.

ZTE Corp. asks SC to lift TRO

Chinese embassy denounces Miriam; she apologizes ZTE says Suplico has no legal right to file case

Rey G. Panaligan

The Supreme Court (SC) was asked yesterday, Sept.27, 2007, by the ZTE Corporation of China to lift the temporary restraining order (TRO) it had issued against the implementation of the firm’s $ 329.5-million contract with the Philippine government for a national broadband network (NBN) project.

In an urgent motion, ZTE also asked the SC that if the TRO is not lifted, a $ 2.9-million bond should be filed by Iloilo Vice Gov. Rolex Suplico, who filed the first case against the implementation of the contract, to answer for whatever damages the telecommunications firm may incur.
