Lucio Tan wins another court case

Taipan Lucio Tan scored another victory, this time at the Supreme Court after it ruled against a petition by the Land Bank of the Philippines.
LandBank argued that Tan’s two flagship corporations, Asia Brewery Inc. and Fortune Tobacco Corp., should buy back its Philippine Airlines (PAL) shares at P5 for every share.

Arroyo asked: How about releasing other prisoners?

MANILA, Philippines — Militant labor on Monday backed the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in its call for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to release other prisoners, particularly political prisoners, now that she has pardoned deposed president and convicted plunderer Joseph Estrada.
Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU, May First Movement) chair Elmer Labog urged Arroyo to free all prisoners held by the government for their political beliefs.

Chief justice rejects calls to take over

CHIEF Justice Reynato Puno yesterday rejected calls by civil society groups for him to head a caretaker government that would replace the Arroyo administration.
Civil society groups and political and Church leaders last week called for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to step down after she granted absolute and unconditional pardon to convicted plunderer and former president Joseph Estrada.
They named Puno as head of the transitional government.

No need for new taxes, says GMA
DUMAGUETE CITY — Stressing that the country’s economic strength is largely attributed to the various financial and economic reforms, including the Expanded Value Added Tax (EVAT), President Arroyo said yesterday that there is no need to implement new tax measures but rather enhance tax administration to generate more revenues for socioeconomic projects.
The President noted that the Integrated Taxation System has immensely contributed to the surge in government’s revenue collection.

Pardon grant not recognition of GMA’s legitimacy
Erap remains in opposition to Gloria

Amid the Malacañang and anti-Estrada media spins that he has turned his back on the opposition and is now allied with President Arroyo, pardoned former President Joseph Estrada yesterday made it clear that he would remain in opposition to the Arroyo administration and stressed his position should not be in doubt simply because he had accepted a free, unconditional and absolute pardon from Mrs. Arroyo.
He was quoted as saying he remains in the opposition as long as the Arroyo government is in existence and until a “new and true leader whose genuine concern is for the masses†is found, Estrada told reporters yesterday, adding there should be no doubts over his position simply because of his acceptance of Mrs. Arroyo’s grant of executive clemency.
At the same time, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr.

Pinoys among crewmen taken by Somali pirates
A group of Filipino seamen were among crew members on board a Japanese chemical tanker hijacked by suspected pirates Sunday off the coast of northern Somalia, Agence France Presse reported Monday.
Maritime officials in Nairobi, Kenya identified the vessel as the Panama-flagged Golden Mori that has 23 crewmen.
The vessel, believed to be carrying oil products, sent a distress message Sunday. The SOS was picked up by a rescue center in Norway and relayed to the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
