Lacson stands in Estrada’s way
Senator says definitely he will run

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Panfilo Lacson has expressed his intention to seek the country’s highest elective post in 2010, putting him on a collision course with three other opposition leaders who have made known their plans to run for president — Senate President Manuel Villar, Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II and deposed President Joseph Estrada.
“My own decision to run in 2010 will depend on three considerations — intent, means and opportunity. If you ask me if I have the intention, the answer is yes,” Lacson said Sunday.

DFA: Not all EU members included in Schengen area
The Department of Foreign Affairs advised Filipino travelers that not all member countries of the European Union are included in the Schengen area.
“Please bear in mind that NOT all European Union (EU) countries are members of the Schengen arrangement. Separate visas must be secured for travel to the United Kingdom and Ireland,” the DFA said.

Church: Think positive in ’08

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales advised Filipinos yesterday to think positive as the nation prepares to greet 2008 and leave behind another year of socio-political noise.
In his New Year message aired over Church–run Radyo Veritas, Rosales called on Filipinos to continue hoping and working for the improvement of their conditions and try to refrain from focusing on negative developments in the country.

Palace group goes after 4 oil companies
THE Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group is seeking P3.8 billion in damages and revenue losses from four petroleum firms accused of smuggling oil into the country.
Group head Antonio Villar Jr. said Oilink International Corp., PTT Philippines Corp., Tri-Solid Movers Services Inc., and Mawab and Andan Resources were not out of the woods yet despite paying P482 million in back taxes and penalties.

Reds launch another ambush in Palawan
THE New People’s Army (NPA) launched another major offense on the duration of the Arroyo government yuletide season truce with the communists, ambushing Marine troops anew in Palawan province Saturday night.
This is the fourth offense to be staged by the rebels during the government truce. The first was when the communists killed three unarmed Marine soldier also in an ambush in Palawan.
