US soldiers order Panamao Hospital closure

AUTHORITIES have began an investigation into disturbing reports that US troops deployed in Sulu province had ordered the closure of a government hospital in the town of Panamao.
The soldiers allegedly barged into the Panamao District Hospital on December 3 and ordered its closure for a still unknown reason.

Health chief warns: Keep ‘piccolo’ from kids
The health department warned the public Sunday against the danger of using a firecracker known as “piccolo” on New Year’s Eve.
“We are calling on parents to keep piccolo out of the reach of their young children,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque said in a report on The Philippine Star.

DOJ suspends 2 prisons execs over Jalosjos ‘escape’

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the suspension of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) superintendent and the chief of the Bureau of Correction’s administrative division, a week after BuCor director Ricardo Dapat was sacked over the controversial escape of convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos.
Justice Undersecretary Fidel Exconde said NBP Superintendent Juanito Leopando and BuCor administrative division chief Teodora Diaz has been placed under a 90-day preventive suspension since Saturday.

Estrada: I repeat, I am not running!
Former president Joseph Estrada on Sunday reiterated he will not pursue any political ambition, noting he will not run in the 2010 presidential race.
In his speech during the gift-giving activities in depressed areas in Manila, Estrada emphasized that he would no longer seek another shot at the presidency come 2010.

New task force sought
to resolve Lintuan killing

The National Press Club (NPC) on Sunday sought the creation of a new task force composed of Manila-based agents from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to resolve the murder of Fernando “Batman†Lintuan, and look into allegations that former military General Jovito Palparan was probably involved.
In Davao City, police have widened the manhunt for a second man allegedly linked to the murder of Lintuan.

Yearender: A year of struggle in Customs collection due to peso surge

A period of struggle and hardship could best describe the year 2007 for the Bureau of Customs, especially as far as meeting its annual target collection ironically due to a very strong peso.
For factors that Customs officials had repeatedly said were “beyond their control,†the bureau was expected to miss this year’s assigned revenue of P228 billion with the peso now ranged at P41 to $1.
Coming into the last month of the year, the BOC failed to meet its assigned monthly target seven times and only delivered positive performance in four months. This left Commissioner Napoleon Morales the burden of raising P28.34 billion with only 18 working days left in December.
