Graftbusters list Erap conviction as main feat

2007 may be the banner year for the Sandiganbayan and the Office of the Special Prosecutor because of the conviction for plunder of former President Joseph Estrada and its record rate of conviction, Special Prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio said yesterday.
Villa-Ignacio said it was the first time in history that a president of the republic was convicted of corruption, and that set a precedent.

Arroyo commemorates Rizal’s death anniversary
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Sunday led the simple commemoration of the 111th death anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal in San Fernando City, La Union.
Cadets from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) gave the President full military honors.
Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. accompanied her.

Palace security says copycat attack vs GMA highly unlikely

Amid fears of copycat attacks triggered by the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the chief of President Arroyo’s security said she is not going to suffer the same fate.
The assurance came from Presidential Security Group (PSG) chief Brig. Gen. Romeo Prestoza, who said yesterday that a “copycat†attack against Mrs. Arroyo was highly unlikely although she had been the target of several assassination plots in the past.

Child rights group hits special treatment to Jalosjos

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A child rights group on Friday called on the government to stop extending special treatment to convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos even as some 30 town mayors from the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay staged a rally here demanding the release of the former congressman.
Honey May Suazo, executive secretary of the Davao City-based Kabiba Alliance for Children’s Concerns in Mindanao, said it was obvious that Jalosjos was being given special treatment inside the San Ramon Prison Farm here.

LPG price down in Luzon
Independent players credit strong peso

Independent petroleum players slashed the price of cooking gas products because of the decreasing contract price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the world market and a stronger peso.
The LPG Marketers Association, whose members operate primarily in Luzon, said it will reduce by P0.50 a kilogram the price of LPG products starting today.
