Arroyo to anti-JDV solons: Back off
Short of saying that he cannot be touched, President Arroyo appealed to allies in the House of Representatives to cease from pursuing efforts to unseat Jose de Venecia as speaker.
According to Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, what Mrs. Arroyo wants is “harmony in the political environment.”

5 soldiers killed in ambush
Six others were wounded in encounter at NPA stronghold in Davao

ZAMBOANGA CITY: At least five soldiers were killed and six more wounded in fierce clashesWednesday with communist insurgents in Mindanao, Army commanders said.
The fighting broke out near the village of Campawan in the seaside town of Baganga in Davao Oriental province where troops attacked a stronghold of the New People’s Army (NPA). It was not immediately known how many insurgents were killed in the fighting, but General Ernesto Boac, commander of the 10th Infantry Division, said security forces were pursuing about 70 gunmen.

Admin officials face arrest
Senators upset at Lozada, Neri for snubbing hearing
The Senate blue-ribbon committee ordered Wednesday the arrest of former socio-economic planning Secretary Romulo Neri and government executive Rodolfo Lozada Jr.
In an open hearing broadcast live over radio and cable television, the senators said the arrest was ordered because Neri and Lozada ignored their subpoena when they failed to attend the hearing on the aborted $330-million National Broadband Network project awarded to China’s ZTE Corp.

Estrada to sue UN for corruption tag
Former president Joseph Estrada vowed Wednesday to file charges before the International Court against the United Nations (UN) for tagging him as the 10th most corrupt leader in the world.
Estrada, who extended his stay in Hong Kong, told radio station DZBB that the statement of the UN’s anti-corruption conference ranking him as the 10th most corrupt leader in the world “is baseless.”
