P75-b stimulus plan to counter recession OKd

PRESIDENT Arroyo and her Cabinet yesterday approved in principle a P75-billion economic stimulus package aimed at shielding the country from the ill effects of a US recession.
The proposal from Albay Gov. Joey Salceda calls for the filing of a supplemental budget that would require congressional approval, and would delay the administration’s goal of balancing the budget this year.

SC affirms ruling on Tan case

The Supreme Court affirmed yesterday with finality an earlier decision lifting the government’s sequestration on the shares of tycoon Lucio Tan in several companies, including Allied Banking Corp. (ABC) and Fortune Tobacco Corp.
The Court stressed that the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) and the Office of the Solicitor General were unable to raise new arguments in their motion for reconsideration filed last Jan. 2 to warrant the reversal of its Dec. 7, 2007 decision.

Russian kicked out of Boracay for ‘scandalous acts’

MANILA, Philippines — A 21-year-old Russian woman has been arrested by immigration agents for alleged indecency and disruptive behavior on Boracay island and is set to be deported to her home country.
The island’s resort owners and law enforcers said Anna Lezhnina engaged in a series of scandalous acts during her stay in Boracay, Aklan.

Pangilinan: I’m still with LP
Senate Majority Leader Francisco Pangilinan clarified Wednesday that he remains a Liberal Party member but will resign if the party leadership will align with the opposition in the 2010 presidential elections.
“Hindi tayo nag-resign bilang miyembro ng partido. Tayo ay kasapi pa rin ng Liberal (I have not resigned as member of the party. I’m still a member of Liberal),” Pangilinan told ABS-CBN’s morning show, “Umagang Kay Ganda.”

Healing priest’s organizers cancel Bulacan sessions

MANILA, Philippines — The healing sessions of popular healing priest Fr. Fernando Suarez in Bulacan were cancelled after a bishop complained he had not permitted the holding of any healing sessions in his diocese.
The committee handling Suarez’s healing schedules nationwide has decided to call off a healing session that was scheduled for Wednesday in Sta. Rita, Bulacan.

Jailed journalists can choose to pay fine over jail

Journalists languishing in jail after being convicted of libel can still file a manifestation to pay a higher fine instead of continued imprisonment, the Supreme Court said.
Supreme Court spokesman Midas Marquez cited the manifestation made by human rights lawyer Harry Roque in pointing out a recent high court circular recommending the imposition of fines on erring journalists convicted of libel instead of serving time in prison.
