Arroyo to name new Comelec commissioners soon

Malacañang said yesterday President Arroyo will soon fill the vacancies in the Commission on Elections after Comelec Chairman Jose Melo appealed to the President to issue an appointment soon as there are only three commissioners left in the commission.

Bill seeks to limit operations of nightclubs, bars

MANILA, Philippines – A pending bill in the House of Representatives aims to limit the operating hours of nightclubs, cocktail lounges, bars and establishments serving liquor from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

House Bill 4205 by Caloocan Rep. Oscar Malapitan aims to penalize operators of such businesses with up to six years’ imprisonment.

Sison claims govt agents tried to kill him

Jose Ma. Sison, founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). has alleged that elements of the Philippine government tried to assassinate him twice purportedly with the involvement of the slain ex-New People’s Army (NPA) chief.

Pump, LPG gas prices post hefty increases

For the sixth straight week, consumers were greeted with higher pump and cooking gas prices during the weekend. Petron Corp., Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Chevron Philippines Inc. (formerly Caltex) and Total Philippines Corp. increased the price of their diesel, gasoline and kerosene products by P1.50 per liter—higher than the usual P.50 hike implemented during recent weeks.

Govt to probe cases of surging rice prices in Mindanao areas

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government has begun an investigation into reports that rice prices in some areas in Mindanao have more than doubled.

Reports indicate that grain costs have reached by as much as P47 a kilo, more than twice of the government-set price of P18.25 a kilo in areas such as General Santos, Koronadal and and Tacurong cities and Sultan Kudarat.
