Congress must stop cycle of sea tragedies

Inadequate investments to modernize domestic shipping fleet one of the reasons for poor safety record

THE never-ending cycle of sea tragedies that had claimed more than 5,000 innocent lives during the last 21 years should be stopped at once, and both houses of Congress must undertake an immediate comprehensive review of the country’s maritime policies and laws.

Taxi operators in Metro Manila filed a petition at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) seeking an additional P10 to reflect the rising price of oil in the world market.

Struggling to prove their innocence on their alleged conspiracy with Abu Sayyaf members in abducting broadcast journalist Ces Drilon, her crew and Mindanao State University professor Octavio Dinampo, Mayor Alvarez Isnaji of Indanan and his son Haider fired their lawyer, Firdausi Abbas, for allegedly issuing statements to the media without consulting them.

Attempt to revive perjury case against Erap fails

Government prosecutors failed yesterday in their attempt to revive a perjury case against former President Joseph Estrada when the First Division of the Sandiganbayan ruled that the case cannot proceed to trial as the Supreme Court has ruled as “moot and academic” the issue of whether or not prosecutors can still present evidence against Estrada in another perjury case.
