Poll: 75% feel ‘worse off’

Most Filipinos say their quality of life has deteriorated in the last 12 months and consider the nation’s economy to have worsened over the past three years, a Pulse Asia survey shows.

The impact of the soaring food and fuel prices is affecting more Filipinos, with 75 percent of them saying they are “worse off” now than last year, according to Pulse Asia’s Ulat ng Bayan July survey. This figure surpassed the 59 percent recorded last March.

MANILA, Philippines—An Air Force officer may be charged with theft after he was reportedly caught stealing nearly P3,000 worth of clothes from a mall in Quezon City.

A police report said Airman 2nd Class Sotero Soriano Jr., 33, of Juno Street, Barangay Bel-Air, Makati City, was arrested on Friday afternoon by a security guard of the SM Department Store in Cubao for shoplifting.

President Gloria Arroyo apparently was fed the wrong information when she announced in her State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday that Smart Communications and Sun had slashed their text-messaging rates starting that day.

Until the announcement, Smart was charging P1 per text if the message was sent to another Smart subscriber and Sun, P0.50 if the text message was sent to another Sun subscriber.

A former chairman of the Development Bank of the Philippines has asked the Fifth Division of the Sandiganbayan to junk the graft case against him, former president Ferdinand Marcos, former first lady Imelda Marcos and her brother, former ambassador Benjamin Romualdez.

Former New York City mayor Rudolph Guiliani has a simple rule on how Filipinos should choose the next leader.

“The very best way to do this… figure out which one you can trust most for the future of your country,” Guiliani said. Filipinos may be in disagreement… “but who do you trust the most? Who do you think is closest to what you want for the future of your country?”
