When President Arroyo, in her State of the Nation address, said that government has responded to the rice price problem by making available commercial rice that costs P32 a kilo, she didn’t say when the price fluctuated to that level and how long it stayed there.

Data from the National Food Authority show that the retail price of commercial rice stayed at P32 per kilo only for one month, in April 2008. As of July, the price climbed to a high of P39.

Local officials fight pact with MILF in Court

Officials from North Cotabato province went to the Supreme Court on Tuesday to block an agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on the contentious issue of ancestral domain.

The officials said they want the agreement to be made public, before it takes effect.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has allowed its employees to take Monday afternoon off to listen to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address, Secretary Raul Gonzalez said.

But all courts nationwide will be operating normally, Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said.

ARMM poll postponement bill certified as urgent

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza on Tuesday confirmed that President Arroyo has certified as urgent the bill calling for the postponement of the August 11 elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

This development came as House Speaker Prospero Nograles said representatives from the region “unanimously” decided to seek the deferment of the elections during a meeting at the Batasan Pambansa.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, Rep. Exequiel Javier of Antique, said yesterday that with President Arroyo’s defense of the Expanded Value-Added Tax (EVAT) in her State-of-the-Nation Address (SoNA), the tax is here to stay, but the government should make a clear accounting of how the funds are spent.

Brother of GMA’s ex-NSA gets top Navy post

President Arroyo has appointed Rear Admiral Ferdinand Golez, brother of Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez, as the new Navy chief, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro announced yesterday.

Golez replaces Vice Admiral Rogelio Calunsag, who will retire from military service this Saturday.

The appointment came with the President’s approval of the promotion of seven brigadier generals to the next rank.
