Duterte: Gov’t erred in making territorial deal
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte slammed members of the government peace panel for agreeing by themselves on the terms of the memorandum of agreement for ancestral domain (MOA-AD) with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The agreement, which was scrapped by the Supreme Court (SC), resulted to deaths of civilians and soldiers and displacement of tens of thousands poor residents from central, northern, and western Mindanao.

Stronger law vs premature poll campaign sought

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has asked Congress for a stronger law against premature political campaigning so it can go after prospective candidates who capitalize on the loopholes of election laws to promote their political ambition long before the start of official political campaign periods.

No more political settlement with the MILF–Palace source

MANILA — The government will no longer hold peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on a political settlement.
This was what a senior Palace official said on Sunday in explaining the new policy announced by President Macapagal Arroyo last week. The President earlier said that the focus of government’s talks would shift from the armed groups to the communities and that “engagements with armed groups shall be about disarmament, demobilization and rehabilitation or DDR.”

Survey on best family planning method urged

With various groups having heated debates on the reproductive health bill, Commission on Population (PopCom) executive director Tomas Osias recently said a survey must be conducted to determine which family planning method is effective.
Osias said the country’s population growth rate (PGR) went down from 2.36 percent in 2000 to 2.04 percent in 2007 but no explanation has been given for the decline.

Yano hits MILF for condoning rogue fighters
Rebel attacks in southern Mindanao described as ‘unspeakable’ and ‘despicable’ by military chief
The head of the Philippine military on Saturday assailed the leadership of the country’s main Muslim rebel group for not stopping a wave of attacks by Muslim rebels.
Gen. Alexander Yano said the failure of the leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to prevent two commanders from occupying Christian towns in southern Mindanao was endangering the peace process between the government and the rebels.

Navy locates C-130 wreck

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Navy said Saturday it has detected parts of the miltary C-130 cargo plane that crashed in the Davao Gulf last Monday.
According to Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo, an echo sounder on board the Navy’s utility boat VU471 detected at around 1:00 p.m. Saturday two objects about 100 meters apart under water. The first was a cylindrical object 60 feet in length at a depth of 40 fathoms or 240 feet below sea surface. The second object was a 40-foot-long cylindrical object with a cross-like tip 30 fathoms below or 180 feet deep.
