German fugitive nabbed by BI agents

Immigration operatives have arrested a German national who is wanted in his country for swindling hundreds of investors through massive computer fraud, it was learned yesterday.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said Peter Uwe Muller, who is married to a Filipina, is currently detained at the immigration jail in Bicutan, Taguig following his arrest last Friday by elements of the Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) law enforcement division.

MANILA, Philippines — Trial can now proceed on the case that a lung cancer victim filed against the local subsidiary of international cigarette brand Philip Morris.

The Court of Appeals on Tuesday gave the go-signal to the Makati Regional Trial Court as it denied a petition by Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI) seeking the dismissal of the complaint by Vincent Reyes.

MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) The bound and gagged body of a Japanese national inside his rented apartment in Las Piñas City Monday night when they responded to neighbors’ complaints of a foul smell coming from the victim’s room, police said.

The victim was identified by his landlord as Hiroyuki Oka, 59. He rented Apartment 6-C Ciongkiao Street, Gatchalian Avenue, Gatchalian Subdivision, Barangay (village) Manuyo 2.

Gov’t to bail out Quedancor

The national government plans to bail out the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corp. (Quedancor) using P475 million of taxpayers’ money before phasing out the agency that has been losing money for years.

Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said the money would be used to pay off the past due loans of Quedancor to various private creditors.

Finance department welcomes revival of tax on text messages

Finance Secretary Margarito Teves welcomed yesterday the revival of the “tax on text” proposal even as its proponent clarified that any additional charge to be imposed on the cell phone service must be absorbed by telecommunication companies (telcos).

Teves said any proposal to impose new taxes will be welcomed because the government is badly in need of more funds to finance its social service programs.

Senators find nothing wrong
with ‘double entry’ in budget

There were indeed two entries of P200 million each in the 2008 budget for the C-5 road extension project, but there was nothing anomalous about it, several senators said Monday after a public hearing.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, said he would even recommend the release of the second P200 million if his signature was needed. He noted that the extension project, including the flyover component, has a total cost of P4.49 billion. He added that the additional P200 million was an amendment introduced by Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. to the 2008 budget.
