Senate OKs renewable energy bill

MANILA, Philippines – A priority government measure granting tax perks to renewable energy investors was approved on third reading Monday by the Senate.

Approved unanimously was Senate Bill 2046 which, among others, provides for a seven-year income tax holiday and a 5% gross income tax as perks for renewable energy projects, which include biomass, solar, wind, geothermal and hydro.

ITOGON, BENGUET—Jessie Panio along with a group of rescuers trudged the murky, smelly water inside the Level 700 tunnel here Monday, searching for the remaining 14 local miners trapped there at the height of Typhoon “Nina” (international codename: Hagupit) last week.

While navigating the dark pit in the Shaft 114 area past 3 p.m., Panio’s group, including miners and Philippine Navy divers, heard shouts.

Cadbury recalls China-made chocolates

HONG KONG – British chocolate maker Cadbury yesterday became the latest foreign company to be hit by China’s tainted milk scandal, ordering a recall of its Chinese-made products after saying tests “cast doubt” on their safety.

Two US food makers were meanwhile investigating Indonesian claims that high traces of the industrial chemical melamine had been found in Chinese-made Oreos, M&Ms and Snickers, but stressed the same goods had tested negative in other Asian countries.

The lawyer of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo on Monday said he will ask the Court of Appeals (CA) to reconsider its September 22 decision denying his client’s petition to dismiss the class suit filed by journalists who accused him of threatening press freedom.

The CA’s Seventh Division denied Mr. Arroyo’s petition “for lack of merit.”

Food bureau to test soya, tofu for melamine

Bureau says lack of personnel snags testing of China-made food products alone

It said it is undermanned but added that the testing of possibly tainted food products will have to go on.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) on Saturday said it will subject soya and tofu to tests to determine if they also have risky levels of melamine, which were found in a number of milk products coming from China.
