DURING A RECENT PRIVATE visit to Palawan, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno was asked the all-important question.

“Would you consider the presidency?”

With a smile, Puno responded meaningfully, “That’s destiny. To be president is destiny.”

DOH expert downplays health risks from China milk

A Department of Health (DOH) official on Saturday downplayed the risks, especially for adults, of getting kidney stones by drinking melamine-contaminated milk from China.

In an interview over radio dzMM’s Magandang Morning, DOH chief epidemiologist Dr. Eric Tayag said babies can get kidney stones if they drink more than two cups a day of melamine-tainted milk for several months.

Military: Clashes kill 14 rebels, 1 soldier

DAVAO CITY — At least 15 Moro rebels and New People’s Army (NPA) members were killed n separate encounters with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in southern Philippines, a military official said Saturday.

Five rebels were killed while scores were wounded in an encounter between government troops and suspected members of the NPA in Tamayong, Calinan, Davao City Friday afternoon.

The youth took centerstage on Sa turday during a meeting of Rotary International in Makati City.

“Lipad Noypi is here to develop us as leaders for tomorrow. Let us make good use of what we have,” Edgardo Limon said in his opening speech at the 2008 New Generation [NewGen] Conference of Rotary International District 3830 at the University of Makati.

Divers locate sunken toxic cargo; no damage or leak found

Salvage divers have pinpointed the location of the toxic chemical endosulfan in a container van inside the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars that sank off Sibuyan Island in Romblon during a typhoon last June.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Capt. Eric Evangelista said divers were able to drill a six-foot wide hole in the side of the sunken ferry where the 40-foot container van containing the toxic cargo is located.

GSIS denies large exposure in US securities

MANILA, Philippines — The Government Service Insurance System on Saturday denied that the state workers’ pension fund had big exposures in the troubled US financial sector but refused to release a detailed financial statement on its $600 million (P28 billion) Global Investment Program.
