buying PHILAMLIFE CO.

Ayala Corp. is willing to acquire the Philippine-American Life and General Insurance Co. (Philamlife) that is now being put on sale, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, the chairman and chief executive of Ayala Corp., said Tuesday.
Zobel added that the financial-services arena has always been of great interest to the company.

16 MMDA operatives sacked for stealing vertical clearance frames

MANILA, Philippines – Sixteen employees of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have been sacked for allegedly stealing P5.1 million worth of vertical clearance frame owned by the Light Railway Transit Authority (LRTA).

2 suspected terrorists wounded by own bomb

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two suspected terrorists were injured after the improvised explosive device (IED) they were rigging exploded in a village in Jolo, Sulu, police said yesterday.
Senior Superintendent Julasirim Kasim, Sulu police director, said the wounded suspects were Jadnan Aluk and Nassal Habibuddin.

Rolito Go likely next for pardon

MANILA, Philippines — After Claudio Teehankee Jr., another prominent murder convict, Rolito Go, found guilty of killing of a young man during a traffic altercation, is likely to be granted presidential pardon soon.
Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said on Tuesday that Go, who shot dead Eldon Maguan in 1991, has become eligible for presidential pardon because he had served “more than half” of his life sentence.

Govt considers halting military push vs. MILF

The government may consider suspending military operations in southern Philippines and resuming peace negotiations with separatist rebels there, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Tuesday.
He cited renewed calls from some sectors for the continuation of the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). He did not name the sectors, except that they come from Mindanao.

Escaped Batasan blast suspect surrenders

The escaped suspect in the bloody Batasan Complex bombing in November 2007 surrendered to a Quezon City judge Tuesday afternoon.
Ikram Indama told ABS-CBN News correspondent Julius Babao that he was able to escape because no one was really securing him at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR), which was located inside Camp Crame, the Philippine National Police’s national headquarters.
