Quedancor employees face bleak Christmas

It will be a bleak Christmas for the 475 rank and file employees of the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corp. (Quedancor) facing dismissal from the service under a rationalization plan the agency is expected to submit this month to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

MANILA, Philippines – Members of the New People’s Army (NPA) are now resorting to terrorism in an act of desperation, an Army officer said Monday.

“The Philippine Army believes that the recent terrorist attacks… were just a show of force or superiority, but in truth, there is an extreme demoralization in their ranks as evident in the continuous surrender of their members,” spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo S. Brawner said in a statement.

Speaker Prospero Nograles aired the warning in the wake of calls by the minority in the House to slash the 2009 national budget by P100 billion to P200 billion, including from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s intelligence fund.

Shabu now more precious than gold

The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) said yesterday the street price of methamphetamine hydrochloride, popularly known as shabu, has skyrocketed by as much as 700 percent in the last seven months.

DDB chairman Vicente “Tito” Sotto III revealed that shabu now costs as much as P15,000 per gram or P15 million per kilo, making it more expensive than 24-karat gold.

10 companies vying to acquire Philamlife

Philippine-American Life and General Insurance Co. (Philamlife) on Monday said that it would make its potential buyers pass through the wringer.

Industry experts said big corporate names that might be interested and have the capacity to acquire Philamlife’s assets are San Miguel Corp., Asia’s biggest food and beverage company, and the Ayala group.

Jamby withdraws from Senate ethics panel, cites ‘delicadeza’

Sen. Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal on Monday stepped down as a member of the Senate’s ethics committee, citing “delicadeza” (sense of propriety) over the ongoing verbal tussle on Senate President Manuel Villar’s alleged part in the double funding for a southern Metro Manila road project.

“It’s a matter of delicadeza,” Madrigal told a radio dzMM interview Monday afternoon.
