MANILA, Philippines—His guard was taking a bath when Ikram Indama, a suspect-turned-state-witness in the deadly bombing attack on the Batasang Pambansa 11 months ago, disappeared from the supposedly tightly guarded Camp Crame at sunrise Monday.

The confessed conspirator in the Nov. 13, 2007, bombing that left six people dead, including Rep. Wahab Akbar, walked out of a state protection deal worked out in July in exchange for crucial testimony.

(Update) MANILA, Philippines – After serving 13 years, convicted killer Claudio Teehankee Jr. was ordered released from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City last week by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez on Monday said Mrs Arroyo approved the granting of executive clemency to Teehankee by virtue of a letter dated October 2 to the Office of the NBP Director.

Declare your intentions for 2010, Noli urged

Vice President Noli de Castro was urged yesterday to declare his intentions for 2010 to hasten the alignment of forces among supporters of the Arroyo administration.

House Deputy Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II, a stalwart of the ruling Lakas party, said De Castro should now announce whether he is running for president or seeking reelection as vice president, and under what party.

SC to prosecutors, judges: Speed up justice system

Chief Justice Reynato Puno told Caloocan City prosecutors and judges to formulate plans that could expedite the delivery of justice, especially for indigents accused of various crimes.

Puno issued this directive as he led the Supreme Court’s Justice on Wheels project at the Caloocan City Jail Friday, which resulted in the release of nine prisoners, the conviction of five inmates for kidnapping, and 20 other prisoners scheduled for release pending the issuance of clearances from local courts.

Departing Pinoy maids to undergo psychological test

Despite protests from migrant workers and local recruitment industry, departing Filipino domestic helpers will have to undergo a psychological test.

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) chief Jennifer Manalili said the agency has already “approved in principle” the planned expansion of medical examination for domestic helpers, and the government is set to enforce the new policy.
