Nograles gives ‘go ahead’ to Cha-cha debates in House

Speaker Prospero Nograles said Saturday that he has given the House committee on constitutional amendments to tackle proposals for Charter change (Cha-cha).
“We have a Committee on Constitutional Amendments not only in the House but also the Senate precisely to handle proposals pertaining to proposed amendments on the constitution. As long as it does not interfere with our normal legislative work, [La Union Rep. Victor Francisco] Ortega’s committee can go ahead in considering proposals on Charter change,” Nograles said in a statement.

Qantas takeoff aborted as damage spotted

SYDNEY, Australia — A Qantas jumbo jet carrying 213 passengers aborted a flight shortly before takeoff from Sydney Saturday when an engineer spotted that one of its wings was damaged, the airline said.
The New Zealand-bound Boeing 747-300 was taxiing towards the runway when damage to a right wing flap was noticed by an engineer on the ground and the pilot was alerted, Qantas said.

Abu Sayyaf bombing plot foiled with raid on Taguig safehouse

Two suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) behind an alleged plot to bomb some public areas in Metro Manila were apprehended last Friday in a joint operation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC) noted that the arrest of the suspected ASG members came in the midst of warnings issued by the PNP about the plans of terrorist groups to bomb malls, hotels and other public places in Metro Manila.

Canada warns of kidnappings, pirate attacks in RP

MANILA, Philippines — While Philippine officials keep tabs on the fate of Filipinos held hostage by pirates abroad, Canada reminded its citizens to be wary of pirates near Philippine waters.
The Canadian Embassy, in an advisory dated Saturday (Manila time), said mariners should take appropriate precautions against such attacks.

Loren appeals to world’s legislators on climate change
Sen. Loren Legarda appealed yesterday to the world’s legislators to implement immediately effective policies on climate change to “reduce the damage and casualties caused by natural disasters” in her speech during the 8th Annual Conference of the Parliamentary Network and the World Bank (PNWB) which was attended by 150 legislators and development leaders from 110 countries.

Docs say FG Arroyo had diarrhea, no heart attack

First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo is back in Manila and recuperating at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City after excruciating abdominal pains forced him to cut short a trip to Peru with President Arroyo and make an emergency stop over in Japan.
Mr. Arroyo’s personal physicians said the first gentleman developed severe abdominal pain and episodes of vomiting while on a Philippine Air Lines flight to Peru for the APEC leaders’ meeting, forcing Malacañang doctors to divert the trip to Osaka, Japan.
