Cancer risk higher with Western diet

Posted by Michille on 12th July 2007

PHILADELPHIA – Older Chinese women who eat a Western-style diet loaded with meats and sweets appear to have a greater risk for breast cancer than women who eat mainly soy and vegetables, a new study has concluded.

Previous research has found connections between a meat- and fat-heavy Western diet and several kinds of cancer, as well as heart disease and diabetes. And other research has identified links between obesity and cancer.

SMOKING CAUSES MUSCLE LOSS

Posted by Michille on 12th July 2007

More bad news for smokers: not only does it cause cancer, heart attacks and strokes but smokers will also lose more muscle mass in old age than a non-smoker, according to a new study published on Monday online in American Journal of Physiology.

The effect of muscle loss predisposes smokers to an accelerated decline in physical function and loss of independence, the international research team from Britain, Denmark and the USA said in their papers.

The researchers discovered that smoking impairs the day-to-day upkeep of muscle. Their research showed that smoking is likely to speed up a condition known as sarcopenia — the loss of muscle mass with aging which is linked to poor balance, gait speed, falls, and fractures.

Hemoptysis

Posted by Michille on 10th July 2007

HEMOPTYSIS is defined as coughing of blood derived from bleeding in the lungs and bronchial tubes. This symptom should be taken seriously however small the amount is.

Coughing of blood must be differentiated from vomiting of blood. Blood from the lungs is usually bright red and mixed with frothy (foamy) or purulent sputum, while blood from the stomach is dark red and mixed with food materials. Hemoptysis must be differentiated also from pseudo-hemoptysis or blood from the nose, lips, gums, tongue, mouth or throat. Inspection on these areas will easily reveal the source of bleeding.

Wind, sun ward off bacteria at beaches

Posted by Michille on 10th July 2007

PORTER, Ind. – Wind, a lack of rain and generous sunshine have combined to keep beaches on the southern shore of Lake Michigan bacteria-free and inviting to swimmers so far this summer.

Beach closings due to high E. coli levels have been virtually nonexistent, and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore officials have found little to worry about when they test the lake’s water.

The National Lakeshore, which tests water samples on a weekly basis, has yet to find any samples from its beaches exceed 235 colonies of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water, the level considered unhealthy for swimming. In fact, most samples this year have tested in the single digits or teens.

Volcanic fumes kill 6 teens in Indonesia

Posted by Michille on 9th July 2007

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Poisonous fumes from an Indonesian volcano killed six teenagers who were camping on the mountain, a doctor said Sunday.

Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other nation and climbing them when they are not especially active is a popular pastime. Salak, where the teens died Saturday, is just south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and is one of the country’s most popular peaks.

Jusuf Fauzan, a doctor at a hospital in the nearby town of Bogor, said families of the victims had refused autopsies, but the dead were believed to have been poisoned by gases from one of two craters on the volcano. The six were found with blood and foam on their mouths and noses, he said.

DARK CHOCOLATE GETS THE OK

Posted by Michille on 9th July 2007

Eating about 30 calories a day of dark chocolate was associated with a lowering of blood pressure, without weight gain or other adverse effects, according to a study in the July 4 issue of Journal of the American Medical Association.

Previous research has indicated that consumption of high amounts of cocoa-containing foods can lower blood pressure, believed to be due to the action of the cocoa polyphenols (a group of chemical substances found in plants, some of which, such as the flavanols, are believed to be beneficial to health).
