Military: Clashes kill 14 rebels, 1 soldier

DAVAO CITY — At least 15 Moro rebels and New People’s Army (NPA) members were killed n separate encounters with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in southern Philippines, a military official said Saturday.

Five rebels were killed while scores were wounded in an encounter between government troops and suspected members of the NPA in Tamayong, Calinan, Davao City Friday afternoon.

Arroyo is worse than Marcos: political detainee

NATIONAL Artist for Literature, activist and Martial Law detainee Bienvenido Lumbera said the present administration is worse than the dictatorial regime of Ferdinand Marcos.

“What is bad is that Ms (Gloria Macapagal) Arroyo has the cover-up of legality for what she is doing. The military is at her command and is doing its worst to suppress desistance,” Lumbera said in a press conference held Saturday.

More deaths in latest Moro clashes

DAVAO CITY –- Death toll from recent clashes between the government and the Moro rebels in Maguindanao has been increasing while both groups have claimed victory.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said they killed about 20 government soldiers and wounded more during the past two days of heavy gunbattle in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Guindulungan, and Datu Piang, both in Maguindanao province.

DENR: Living in hi-risk areas should be a crime

DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) executives believe that putting houses in high-risk areas should become a crime.

In a press conference Saturday, DENR undersecretaries Eleazar Quinto, Manuel Gerochi, and Demetrio Ignacio are one in saying that the creation of such a law would prevent people from residing in high-risk areas.

Mining-rich LGUs beg for mining share

DAVAO CITY — Having rich mineral resources does not necessarily make a rich province. This is the fact shared by two governors in the Davao Region whose provinces are host to mineral-rich resources: Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental.

The two governors are in fact calling on the National Government to allow large-scale mining industries to directly remit the share of the province in the rights and royalties that the mining companies pay.

THE retrieval of the ill-fated Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) C-130 Hercules Lockheed is still being studied by PAF because while it is necessary to inspect the 37-year-old plane to determine the cause of the crash, it will cost a lot to retrieve it from the 426-foot depth.
