Marines rescue 3 of 5 hostages in Basilan
ZAMBOANGA CITY — Marine troops rescued Monday night three of five non-government organization (NGO) workers who were seized by gunmen believed to be Abu Sayyaf bandits in the island province of Basilan.
The rescue of Romeo Delos Reyes, Dionisio Estandarte, and Ludy Borja Bekit brought down to two the number of captives still in the hands of their abductors.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—They are supposed to be only visitors, but after six years they are still around and some local officials are wondering whether they are already part of the Filipino family.
Officially, they are called the “visiting forces†but there has been no sign that American soldiers are leaving anytime soon and the officials are asking why the “visit†seems to have become a permanent deployment.

COTABATO CITY, Philippines—The military on Tuesday announced the capture of yet another Moro Islamic Liberation Front camp in Maguindanao following Sunday’s air and ground assaults.
As this developed, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) announced it has suspended the implementation of socio-economic projects in Central Mindanao because of the unstable situation.

RP’s biggest gold ring to be displayed in Davao festival

TAGUM CITY, Philippines–For a week starting Monday, the country’s biggest gold ring will be shown off in Mindanao’s “festival of festivals.”
The Philippine gold-rich province of Compostela Valley is joining Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival, and among the highlights is the public display of its so-called Solidarity Ring.
