‘Comfort women’ pressure Japan for apology

TOKYO – A group of Asian women forced to work as sex slaves for Japan’s soldiers during World War II urged the country’s lawmakers Tuesday to pass a resolution demanding an official apology.
“Survivors are quickly ageing, still suffering from pain and complications from damage in the days of sexual slavery,” said a statement from a committee representing the so-called “comfort women” and their families.

Hu spells out China’s key role against recession
LIMA (Reuters) — Chinese President Hu Jintao spelled out Friday a potentially ambitious role for his country in staving off a deep global recession as he and US President George W. Bush prepared for a weekend summit of leaders from Asia and the Americas.
Hu and Bush, whose presidency is in its last weeks, discussed trade and other issues Friday night in Peru’s capital, before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum of 21 leaders representing more than half of global output.

Major earthquake hits Indonesia

JAKARTA — A major 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island early Monday, destroying houses and triggering a tsunami warning but there were no reports of fatalities, officials said.
The US Geological Survey (USGS), which initially said the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 before downgrading it to 7.5, said it struck 136 kilometers (84 miles) off the coastal town Gorontalo at a depth of 21 kilometers.

Thaksin divorce won’t free frozen funds

BANGKOK–A lawyer for Thailand’s opposition party said Sunday that billionaire ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra would not recoup his frozen assets simply by divorcing his wife.
Thaksin’s 32-year marriage to Pojaman was officially ended on Friday at the Thai consulate in Hong Kong, with family and intelligence sources claiming the split was being carried out for financial or legal reasons.

Taiwan ex-president arrested for graft
TAIPEI: Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian was arrested on Tuesday as prosecutors sought to detain him in connection with a long-running corruption probe, officials said.
Chen is accused of money laundering, embezzling government funds, taking bribes and forging documents, a spokesman for the investigation said, adding that the charges carry a minimum five-year jail term.

Indonesia executes three Bali bombers by firing squad
TENGGULUN, Indonesia (AFP) — Three Islamists sentenced to death for the Bali bombings which killed 202 people were executed by firing squad early Sunday, sparking clashes between police and their emotional supporters.
“At around 00:15 a.m. (1715 GMT Saturday) the three convicted men on death row, Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra, were executed by firing squad,’’ said attorney general’s office spokesman Jasman Panjaitan. “The autopsy results show that all three are dead,’’ he added.
