Cadbury recalls China-made chocolates

HONG KONG – British chocolate maker Cadbury yesterday became the latest foreign company to be hit by China’s tainted milk scandal, ordering a recall of its Chinese-made products after saying tests “cast doubt†on their safety.
Two US food makers were meanwhile investigating Indonesian claims that high traces of the industrial chemical melamine had been found in Chinese-made Oreos, M&Ms and Snickers, but stressed the same goods had tested negative in other Asian countries.

Chinese astronaut takes historic walk in space
By BEN BLACHARD
BEIJING (Reuters) — Astronaut Zhai Zhigang became the first Chinese man to walk in space yesterday, clambering out of China’s Shenzhou VII space craft in a technological feat that Beijing wants the world to marvel about.
“I’m feeling quite well. I greet the Chinese people and the people of the world,” Zhai said as he climbed out of the craft, his historic achievement carried live on state television.

China official says milk scandal ‘under control’

BEIJING—China, seeking to assure the world its products are safe, said on Wednesday a tainted milk scandal had been brought under control and recently tested liquid milk samples showed no traces of a toxic chemical.
“There is no problem,” Xiang Yuzhang, the national quality watchdog’s chief inspection official, told reporters in Beijing.

At least 60 dead in Pakistan blast; Filipina wounded
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AFP) — Rescuers were Sunday set to search the smouldering remains of Islamabad’s Marriott Hotel for survivors following a huge truck bombing which left at least 60 people dead and 200 injured.
There were fears more dead would be found in the wreckage of the hotel, a popular gathering place for foreigners and Pakistan’s elite, which was almost totally destroyed by the attack at dinner time on Saturday. A security official said many people leaped to their deaths from upper floors.

Chinese baby dies, hundreds sick from milk powder

SHANGHAI – China reported a first death on Saturday in a scandal over contaminated milk powder which it blamed for causing kidney stones and making 432 babies fall ill.
Sanlu Group, a dairy producer partly owned by New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra Co-operative Group, has been ordered to halt production after a preliminary investigation found its products were responsible, officials said.
