TOKYO—A Russian navy intelligence ship has been in the Pacific off Japan’s southern Okinawa island, possibly to monitor radio wave data from US forces, Japan’s Kyodo News reported Friday.

Historic moment for the world, says China leader

BEIJING (AFP) — The XXIX Olympic Games, costing an estimated $ 40 billion and shrouded by political controversies, burst into life Friday with a spectacular start to the opening ceremony.

President Hu Jintao officially declared the Games open at the ‘’Bird’s Nest’’ stadium at 11:04 p.m. local time (1504GMT) in front of 90,000 spectators and a worldwide television audience of up to four billion.

SLAMABAD — At least nine mountaineers died near the summit of K2 in the Himalayas when a huge chunk of ice sheared off the mountain and hit them, and several more climbers were missing, Pakistani tour operators said Sunday.

TOYAKO, Japan: Leaders of the Group of Eight powers warned Tuesday that soaring oil and food prices pose a “serious challenge” to world economic growth, calling for boosted crude production capacity.

“The world economy is now facing uncertainty and downside risks persist,” the G8 said in a joint statement.
