Food crisis payback for ‘20 years
of mistakes’ – UN expert
PARIS: The United Nations’ new top adviser on food blamed two decades of wrong-headed policies by world powers for the food crisis sweeping the globe.
In a stinging interview published on his first day in office, Frenchman Olivier de Schutter, a law professor and human rights campaigner, told Le Monde newspaper that the international community was “unforgivable†for its failure to anticipate the riots sparked last month by soaring food prices.

Vatican shrugs off Time ‘Top 100′ list snub to pope

ROME — The Vatican on Friday dismissed the US newsweekly Time’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people as “bizarre and arbitrary,” saying the Holy See was pleased that the pope was not included.
“I am happy about this absence (of Pope Benedict XVI) from the list, whose composition is kind of bizarre and arbitrary,” Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told Agence France-Presse.

HELSINKI — A Finnish court on Monday ruled a man had intentionally transmitted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to five women and had unprotected sex with least 14 others, exposing them to possible infection.

UN meets today on food battle plan

GENEVA (AFP) — United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon leads today, Monday, a concerted effort by 27 key UN agencies to tackle the growing crisis caused by a worldwide sharp rise in basic food prices.
The UN was scheduled at a two-day conference in the Swiss capital Bern to reveal a battle plan of emergency measures, while exploring other longer-term measures to solve the world’s food crisis.
