Thaksin divorce won’t free frozen funds

BANGKOK–A lawyer for Thailand’s opposition party said Sunday that billionaire ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra would not recoup his frozen assets simply by divorcing his wife.
Thaksin’s 32-year marriage to Pojaman was officially ended on Friday at the Thai consulate in Hong Kong, with family and intelligence sources claiming the split was being carried out for financial or legal reasons.

World leaders agree on economic reforms, program to stimulate growth
WASHINGTON, D.C.: World leaders agreed on an action plan to restore global growth and prevent future financial upheaval at a crisis summit here, promising spending plans, a trade deal and reforms.
“One of the key achievements was to establish certain principles and take certain actions for adapting our financial systems to the realities of the 21st century,†US President George W. Bush told a post-summit press conference.

World leaders pledge action plan
Declaration readied on moves to ward off recession

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (Reuters) — World leaders grappling with the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s pledged on Friday to deliver a concrete plan to ward off recession and prevent future meltdowns.
But prospects for joint action on growth, let alone a major overhaul of the world financial system, looked slim with host President George W. Bush resisting bold moves before leaving office in two months and Presidentelect Barack Obama absent.

Death March, Japanese camp survivors disband group

WASHINGTON – A dwindling group of Bataan Death March and Japanese prison camp survivors disbanded itself for lack of able-bodied members after commemorating for the last time on Tuesday Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery, closing a 62-year-old tradition.
Lester Tenney, 88, commander of the organization American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, told the Washington Post as few as 100 or so survivors of the World War II Death March were still alive and none had the energy or inclination to lead the group he has headed since May.

Taiwan ex-president arrested for graft
TAIPEI: Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian was arrested on Tuesday as prosecutors sought to detain him in connection with a long-running corruption probe, officials said.
Chen is accused of money laundering, embezzling government funds, taking bribes and forging documents, a spokesman for the investigation said, adding that the charges carry a minimum five-year jail term.

Indonesia executes three Bali bombers by firing squad
TENGGULUN, Indonesia (AFP) — Three Islamists sentenced to death for the Bali bombings which killed 202 people were executed by firing squad early Sunday, sparking clashes between police and their emotional supporters.
“At around 00:15 a.m. (1715 GMT Saturday) the three convicted men on death row, Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra, were executed by firing squad,’’ said attorney general’s office spokesman Jasman Panjaitan. “The autopsy results show that all three are dead,’’ he added.
