China cancels series of military, diplomatic contacts with US

WASHINGTON (AP) — China has abruptly canceled a series of military and diplomatic contacts with the United States to protest a planned multibillion dollar US arms sale to Taiwan, American officials told The Associated Press.

Beijing has notified the US that it will not go forward with several senior level visits and other cooperative military-to-military plans, said Marine Maj. Stewart Upton, a Defense Department spokesman, on Monday.

US experts: Tiny bits of melamine OK in most foods

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tiny traces of melamine, the chemical that has set off a global food safety scare, are not harmful in most foods, except baby formula, US government experts said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday its safety experts have concluded that eating a minuscule amount of melamine – 2.5 parts per million – would not raise health concerns, even if a person ate food every day that was tainted with the chemical.

Female green card applicants required to get STD vaccine

DALLAS (AP) — A new requirement that girls as young as 11 be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted virus before they can become legal U.S. residents is unfair, immigration advocates say.

The federal rule added Gardasil to the list of vaccinations that female immigrants ages 11 to 26 must get before they can obtain “green cards.’’ The series of three shots over six months protects against the strains of the human papillomavirus blamed for most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts. But the vaccine is one of the most expensive on the market and controversial.

US bans betting vs financial stocks

WASHINGTON – Federal securities regulators, in an effort to boost investor confidence in the face of a market crisis, took the dramatic step yesterday of temporarily banning the trading practice of betting against financial stocks.

The move, announced on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s Web site, will temporarily ban what is called short selling of nearly 800 financial stocks.

Stocks continue free fall

NEW YORK – Global stock markets went into a dizzying fall yesterday as the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers sparked fears that more bad news is on the horizon for the finance sector and the economy.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled below 11,000 with a slide of 4.42 percent to 10,917.51, its largest one-day point loss since the reopening after the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
